Default any benefits to upsample from 16bit 44.1 to 24bit

any benefits to upsample from 16bit 44.1 to 24bit 48k...

original tracks are from 16bit 44.1k or recorded by user at different quality, the latter will have some processing like EQ and reverbs applied to.

Thanks

RayS

What is the nature of the project? (CD, music for TV or film, etc.)

At what stage is the project? (What's next?)

Describe your rig, please.

Its SFX tracks for live surround stems etc... This is how I have receiced the files from another ProTools studio...some of the original material was at 8 bit (yes you read correctly 8 b i t) then the whole thing was upsampled to 48K 24bit ...to use hi sample reverb algorithms and editing.....but then they just heard that this was a waste of time went noutboard gear?? but left everything at 48k 24bits etc...and here we are with the questions.... So what can be gained from doing this at all....the most quality will be from the original depth and rate even if you add the million dollar reverb plugin....right??? I would think that garbage in a jewel box is still garbage ???javascript:void(0)

just trying to settle this way of doing things for the sake of sanity or higher learning.

Thanks

Ray

The quick, untechnical answer is that it won't improve the sound of what you have already. It may make a difference if you are going to apply some processing to those tracks by way of plug-ins or combining/mixing/bussing tracks together. It will improve the sound quality of anything new that you record to the session via analog input, or by digital input if the source is at 24 bit.

Reminds me of the CSI trick where they take the crappy black & white securicam picture and 'sharpen' it so they can identify the criminal and read the licence plate. Upsampling to 24-bit is like using a Fineliner to draw a big block letter on a billboard - you still get the big block letter, it's just made of thinner lines!
