Waves SSL 4000 opinions?
I have a $200 voucher from waves about to expire; I have mercury TDM so the only choices I see are SSL ($450) or The Kings Microphones which...I don't see using much if at all. Are the SSL's all their hyped to be?
Thanks! |

Re: Waves SSL 4000 opinions?
Of course not, is anything ever?
Having said that, I really like and use the SSL G eq a lot. Not the channel strips, just the one labeled SSL EQ. |

Re: Waves SSL 4000 opinions?
My favorite part of the bundle is the Master Bus Compressor. I think it works great for squashing drums and I like using it on my master bus. YMMV
It's fun to have the channel strips if you like the feel of a console in the box.

The EQ is great. I use it on tons of stuff. Great on guitars, among other things. The bundle is, IMHO, pretty much a must have.

Re: Waves SSL 4000 opinions?
I didn't want to like it. But its ended up being my main workhorse. It's clean for sure... Especially when you stack miles of tracks on top of each other. Can you achieve the same results elsewhere? yes. But the package is very musical to me. I never worked on an SSL in real life. But I have worked on Neves, Tridents, MCIs and a bunch of others. And this feels like a console to me. Just in terms of what I expect to hear when I turn a knob. That may sound goofy, but its the best way I can explain it. I don't like the G channel strip as much as the black one. I like the bell curve buttons for guitars. Again, thats just me.
I like the SSL plugs much better than the Waves Neves. And I like them better than the Renn or the other Waves stuff. I've got Mercury and I reach for SSL more than any of the Merc stuff.

Re: Waves SSL 4000 opinions?
I own Mercury + SSL. I love and use the SSL stuff all the time, the E channel strip and quad comp especially. The SSL, API, CLA V-series and Puig stuff are some of my most used Waves plug-ins.
