Will this work for 7.9?
Hi, yes, yes, yes...I know it's old. It's what I use thos and I'm very happy with it.
Old PC died, getting a new one. Can the experts tell me (a) will this work and (B) if there ARE hardware/software issues could you point them out / suggest solutions? Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help. Dell Precision 380 Pentium D CPU 3.4GHz 4GB memory XP Pro Service Pack 3 Western Digital SATA WD1600JS (7400rpm) I know the HDD should be 10,000rpm, how much of an issue is it? |

Re: Will this work for 7.9?
Hard drives are typically 5400, 7200, or 10000. So, is that really a 7400, or a 7200, or a 5400? And you do need a SEPARATE, SECONDARY hard drive for this to work, and 7200 rpm is perfectly fine. Nobody seems to have reported any performance gains with a 10,000. Don't waste your time trying to coax any performance out of a 5400.
BUT. You're at the lower fringe-end with a Pentium D processor, even for PT 7. If there was any way to at least get a core 2 duo processor in there, you'd be better off, IF it's compatible with the motherboard. You can get them for next to nothing on Ebay. No point going with extra RAM, since 32-bit Windows will only see 4gb anyway. Didn't specify if this was a laptop or a desktop....DELL laptops are a total crapshoot with PT. |

Western Digital Black Drives like WD1003FZEX work well for Sessions
I think you have a Blue Drive, OK for the system boot drive if you want to move up to 11 or 12 you'll want an i7 CPU, the D is quite old

Re: Will this work for 7.9?
It looks like you are thinking of buying a used computer from someone, as you are getting Windows XP. My original system was on a Pentium D, built by Sweetwater in 2006, and I think it came with 1GB of ram. I eventually swapped out the Pentium D for a Core 2 Duo 4400, and it made the rig much more robust (also went up to 4GB ram). I think I paid about $35 new for the Core 2 Duo about 4 years ago and used it for about 2 years until the motherboard died and I built my current setup.
If you do go with Windows XP, stay off of the internet with that machine, since Microsoft quit providing security updates for that version several years ago.

Re: Will this work for 7.9?
Thanks for the advise guys.
I went ahead and bought it - heck for the money why not... The PC I was using was only 2GB memory and a slower processor but it worked okay. Yes, this WD is 7200... But it's having a problem in that I can load it but it doesn't run... Any theories? |
