HELP! Mic inputs have disappeared in I/O. MBox 3

I've trawled these forums and as a last resort decided to post for the first time in 15 years!

my setup:-
PRO TOOLS (11.3.1)
Mac Book Pro (OS 10.8.5)
MBox 3 (driver 1.2.1)

Ok…. I've just been mixing a stack of tunes for the last couple of months with no recording done since late last year. Today I went to punch in on a bass track and noticed I couldn't choose the "mic/line 1" mic input as it was greyed out??

Advice on here was to default your I/O.. I did that but the default that came up had no mic input options anymore. I have AVID MBOX chosen on Hardware, playback engine and I/O. Audio plays fine through the MBox and out to my monitors.

When I exit Pro tools and open the MBox settings icon in System Preferences, the Hardware Inputs are working and I can even plug my bass in and hear it. However as soon as I fire up Pro tools they are greyed out. It seems somethings is disabling them or not recognising them?

I suspect there is a MBox 3 driver issue and have tried both drivers 1.2 and 1.2.1 with no luck. My mic inputs just don't seem to exist. (These are the drivers recommended by Avid for OS 10.8.5). I took a punt with 1.2.2 but this was worse and I had no MBox sound at all…. went back to 1.2.1

Firstly, Thanks For your reply/help. much appreciated.

1) No, the sessions overwrite box isn't checked
2) The "greyed" out mic/line 1 is in the mix window on the channel strip. (From when I recorded them and it was available). It's greyed them out now as it's unavailable. In the I/O setup window, the only 2 inputs it gives me after I hit default is "analog 1-2" (Stereo) and "S/PDIF Left-Right" (Stereo)". When I click on the greyed Mic/line1 in the mix window, there are no inputs available. only Interface, Bus and Plugin.
3) I just tried "deleting path" in the I/O setup window, then restoring defaults and the same ones just come up again with no mic inputs.. I've opened up 5 different songs and the same mic/line1 greyed out issue is common.

Like I said, if I get out of Pro Tools and open up the MBox settings program in System Preferences, I can get the mic inputs working.
