So is this how PT10 would run on a SSD drive? Or is RAM even faster?
Listening to the Demo song for PT 10 i can move the start point around and then let it play for a while and Disk usage will go from 4% to 18-33%. (Running on internal HD).
When loading the project from RAMdisk it runs at 4 % no matter what I do to it, and moving the selection/play marker around is faster and does not affect performance.

This is incredibly cool. Suddenly I don`t think I have to fantasize about getting an SSD HD for my iMac anymore. (The cost of switching HD`s at a qualified shop is 5 time the cost of the actual HD here in norway..)

It seems like it would be faster than SSD for session work. Even SSD, while insanely fast, doesn't seem to be anywhere near as fast as stuff residing in RAM.

After working in Ramdisk on my main rig for over 24 hrs now I'm never going back!!

In my workflow so far, what I've done is:

1. Bought Goodsync (since it offers a scheduler to sync/copy every few mins)
2. Set up 2 ramdisks (one called tracking, the other session - they don't take up ram until you put stuff in them so you can have multiple ramdisks for different session types ). The 2 ramdisks are Applescript "apps" running at startup, per Dism's videos.
3. Set up a Goodsync task to do a one-way copy of "changed files" from each ramdisk to a corresponding folder on my external session FW800 drive. It monitors for changes & copies every five minutes.
4. Set up Goodsync task to back up my tracking/sessions folders to a 2nd external drive once a day (for extra protection).
5. When I am ready to work I just copy the session to the Ramdisk (tracking or session), go to town, and I don't have to think about copying it back to HDD.
6. If I want to work on another session.... I can, in two clicks, have Goodsync do one last backup and then I just run the script to recreate the ramdisk, and copy up a new session.
7. I let Time Machine back up my "main" HDD sessions/tracking folders before/after sessions.

So far this works a treat, and allows me 9/10th of the Disk Cache feature. I've been test-opening the HDD copies sync'ing from ramdisk with no issues, so this looks like the way forward for me for now. With any luck I may never record onto/mix from a spinning disk ever again!

Ram is much faster than SSD. The ssd is still passing through a controller, while the ram is access directly by the system.

a ddr3 100mhz clock speed (yeah that's low) ram has a maximum read speed of 6400 mbs, compared to a 200 mbs read speed for HDD's and SDD's

Has anyone been able to get this working with PT 9/os x yet? I'm still tinkering but have yet to get the ramdisk to be anything other than a transfer only drive within PT.

If I do get it working I'll be sure to post back.

I couldn't get it to work under PT9 on my MBP, always came up as a transfer drive no matter how I would try and format the ramdisk.

It seems perhaps Pro Tools only got friendly to ramdisks as record volumes with PT10?
