Per year, and I am pretty sure all this is clear on iLok.com.

Yes.
And it is only attached to the iLok it is bought for. So if it gets lost/broken so that you have to take advantage of ZDT, the replacement iLok will need a new purchase of ZDT.

Still worth it if you have valuable licenses or you are a professional (income depends on those licenses)

Wow, its come down quite a bit. Didn't it use to be like 400 a year back in the day of iLok 1?

I just moved over to iLok 3 with my licenses. Liking the more robust of it.

I protect my iLoks like children. NEVER connected directly to the USB port, ALWAYS on a USB extension.
If on a stage, the USB hub is under my laptop stand out of the way and view. I never leave the room without my iLok in hand.
Granted, I have with trusted people to go take a dump but never when at lunch or when is no one on stage.

A colored ribbon attached and a Tile tracker or Apple AirTag and a key ring tag saying "self-expiring license keys, no monetary value" but offer a reward for return with a phone number and email address.

I am my worst issue, with misplacing them. Tile tracker has saved my ass. Looking and seeing the ribbon hanging off the laptop has helped remind me not to leave them accessible when people I don't know/don't trust are around.

None of that will help when an ilok just stops working (which has happened many times with ilok 1 and ilok 2 dongles over the years.) Sad but true.

And if you are not in the CONUS, it's best to declare it stolen rather than broken (because no matter where you are, they ask for broken iloks be shipped to the Bay Area location of Pace. Which can be costly because you have to do it in a limited timeframe to get permanent licenses and ship insured.) Declaring it stolen/lost avoids that.

Basic lesson is keep 1 spare ilok with you somewhere not with your ZDT ilok when travelling. If something goes wrong (broken/stolen) declare stolen/lost, pop the spare ilok in, buy new ZDT for that ilok, transfer temp/permanent licenses to it. Keep working and get another spare ilok ASAP.

iLok 1 were just goofy big and fragile, iLok 2 had some serious reliability problems early on. Fragility of iLok 3 is not something I really worry about, but still I use a dongle/buddy cable, have to with USB-C and maybe it will protect both the iLok and computer port if dropped. For me the real risk is the idiot owner misplacing the iLok. Only ever lost one iLok... pulled the lost trigger and then found it a few days later. !@#$%

It was based on the number of licenses on your ilok 20 years ago.

The more you had the more it cost. Your milage may have been different.

Use to get made fun of about the dongle buddy until a producer literally lopped off an iLok 2 on a music editors laptop.
Immediate end of session.

I don't think the studio was too happy replacing all his licenses.
