Default AIR Stereo Width Plug weirdness?

Okay...AIR Stereo Width Plug. I got a setting, I got it on the drumkit. I'm not even discussing the merits of whether it should be on the kit or not, this just as an experiment. I solo the Kick. On this particular AIR StereoWidth Plug setting it definitely sounds like the kick is heavy left...way heavy. Okay so I bounce to disc a few seconds of it solo'd....both interleaved & dual mono files. I import those bounced files back in the session and take a look & Left & Right are identical db gain. It's wearing me out, I'm absolutely hearing the kick heavy left side...the left side of the bounced files should be more dbs than the right side. No? I hear it playing back that way also but when I check the gain, they're identical. What aren't I getting?

Thanks.

The perception that the kick is left probably has to do with the precedence effect. I would guess that the plugin is in comb mode, and what you're hearing is a result of the applied comb filtering that is inverted between channels.

Hey thanks for the reply...no it's in Adjust mode. When I turn the Delay knob up, I hear the track move to the left. There's operator error going on here...maybe that's how it's supposed to work but I would think you could move it the right also? Somehow?

Ah...precedence effect, aka Haas delay. The delay knob delays the right channel when in adjust mode. Not operator error.

If you want to shift it right, you'll need to use a multichannel delay plugin that allows you to delay the left side instead.

I don't get it, explain me. This plug in only delays the right channel in this mode?

Yes.

Snipped from the Creative Collection Plug-ins Guide:
Adjust Adjusts the existing stereo width of the
signal by M-S encoding, equalizing the S compo-
nent with the Low/Mid/High controls and
boosting/attenuating it with the Width control,
then M-S decoding back to stereo. The Delay
control delays the right signal relative to the left
for an additional widening effect (known as
“Haas panning”).

Nothing like RTFM...thanks for the post!

Hey, how hard could it be to have a plug that does this exactly opposite also...like delaying the left side. I still don't get it apparently.

I do agree with you. What's the point of being able to Haas pan one direction but not the other?

Any delay plugin that allows independent control of left and right or any delay plugin that can be loaded as multi-mono will let you do the same thing.
