No sound, default outs 1-2 greyed out or gone

I returned to my studio set up after months away, and cannot hear playback. the usual suspects, check: hardware is fine and I hear everything but PT output. I have checked mutes, solo, etc.

My playback engine is my MBox Studio. I recorded a test, and can't hear it, though the meters are bouncing. The I/O setup looks strange to me, for instance there is no output selected for Monitor Output Path. I would expect to be able to select the default Outputs 1-2 under Stereo (or Bus, sorry), but there is only MBox mono 1-8. I have selected and deleted all outputs for Output and Bus, and reset to default but no dice.

Also, when I go to check old sessions, as they boot, I get a window saying system outputs 1-2 (default basic, can't think of the wording) are unavailable. detailed report says the same). Can't hear them either.

There may yet be a bonehead explanation, but ... do tell. I have followed checklists and watched YouTube videos but no luck so far.

One other possibly relevant item: In I/O setup, at top under MBox Pro it says CoreAudio. I am not recording through or using CA devices as far as I know. I just record voice and guitar.

I would appreciate your thoughts!

In other news, there is no option to edit my signature below. I am running PT Studio 2023.9 on Ventura 13.6.

Today I remembered I have PTPrefs and shall proceed to use it. Also, that I can delete and re-install PT. At least I hope I can. Will look up first.

Anyway, I will report back after trying both. [salute!]

This makes me suspect that the Mbox is NOT selected to be the audio engine in Pro Tools(which is easy to do if you power up the Mbox after the computer is booted).

Thank you, I had done this several times before, and never got the normal stereo output path.

This time, I shut down and restarted, got there. Normal "MBox default 1-2" outs.

However, still no sound.

Sorry to ask this, but when you reset I/Os and Buses to default in hardware setup, did you click “OK” or just close the window? You must click OK to save the changes. I’ve done it before.

Can you post screen shot of your I/Os and Buses?

One other quick thought:
If you are on a Mac, you must also make sure that the MBox is selected in Mac System Setting-- Sound and in the Audio Midi Setup application

Thank you both for your suggestions! I did check AudioMidi and Sound, made sure MBox selected. I did click Okay when resetting default Output/Bus screen.

Here are 3 screenshots: Output I/O, Bus I/O, and meters from Mix screen (taken when no sound...there were no Mutes on, etc.

You didn't do what I've done (a couple times) and forgot to power up the monitors or headphone amp, didja?

Looks to me (although I don’t know the MBOX Studio’s routing system), like you are using a Bus called ‘Out 1-2’ that isn’t actually mapped to an output. Try ticking the checkbox in I/O setup along from that bus and map it to your designated MBOX output marked with the small speaker icon (called curiously MBOX Studio Internal 1-2).
