Default Pro Tools HDX and a new Macbook Pro

I was working in a studio here in Atlanta and i noticed the computer i was mixing on was a new mac mini 16gigs of ram...blah blah blah. Even with a protoolsasaurous rex of a session it kept thundering along. This got me thinking. Instead of upgrading to a new mac pro could i get away with the macbook? I would kill 2 birds with one stone and i would not have to mirror everything on the laptop. Of course a larger monitor would be in order.

I am actually looking for people who have done this or had some experience with this setup. Those of you who just have to have the biggest and bestestest are not really the people i would like to hear from at this point.

Any thoughts?

I'd be interested in hearing replies to this. I'm currently mixing on a beefy but older MBP (4 core i7 @2.2GHz, 16GB ram, SSD, PT11) which isn't enough for me. I'm about to make a studio upgrade and will need more I/Os, so I was thinking about buying a used HD system (Mac Pro / 32 channels of I/O) but if I can get away with just upgrading the notebook I think I would go that route.

I have the current top-of-the-line MBP fully loaded and it peforms very well. It's noisy when you max your session, though. But then again, at my home studio I only use HDN (TB) and if you plan to get external enclosure for HDX card(s) and use that as much as you can, I don't see a problem.

Thanks for the reply - I was thinking perhaps of getting an HDN thunderbolt chassis - but you're right, the noise from the notebook will probably annoy me.

Just buy a TB display and put the notebook under the table, just like me
