Default Do I need to assign a \"record\" drive?

Hi All,
I have heard I may need to assign one of my hard drives as the record drive. Obviously it's going to be the one without the OS on it, in this case the drive is "E". If I am merely storing my files on, is that the same as assigning it?

PTLE 6.7
Asus K8V SE deluxe
AMD 3000+
2x 80 GB Seagate HDs
Kingston Ram 1Gb

Thanks,

Shaun
