Pre amp first! 96i/o is line level only.

Yeah DI should work, make sure it says balanced out and that should get u to line level.

Of course xlr to 1/4" TRS cable

I suppose it could be 1/4" TRS to 1/4" TRS also if your DI box will let you do that

so if not my pre amp and not a DI box what then? kinda funky they make a "pro" interface without mic or direct inputs...

Many preamps are equipped with hi-z inputs, which is what you need. Why don't you want to use a DI and/or a preamp?

i suppose i will use my avalon i just really prefer to record everything dry except vocals... are there direct input to line output units? i really luv pro tools and digidesign products but i just dont get why they would make the HD interface without inputs that u could atleast switch from line to direct level

You can't get much "drier" than a DI box or, for that matter, a good transparent mic pre. It's been like that since the beginning of recording audio time. Tape machines certainly never had line inputs for guitar.

all the DI boxes i have seen output at mic level thats my problem with DI box... and my avalon is awesome but definantly not transparent... i know there has to be something passive that converts direct input into line out...i did read in my 96io manual that it accepts balanced and unbalanced signal?? that doesnt mean it would accept a direct input??

You will be able to record your guitar that way, but don't do it, your sound will suffer. Get a good mic preamp with a DI input, Avalon has the M5 and the U5, I use the Universal Audio 6176 for recording DI, it is really good.
