But there are different kinds with-in the brands... Like if he picks HHB (because they are good) should he get the CDR-74, CDR-74 Gold, CDR-80, CDR-80ip, CDR 80 Thermal , etc... ???????

I always wanted to know the TRUE difference between Gold, and not Gold, and both them vs Thermal -- What is the difference, and what is the BEST for Masters ???

I always picked Golds over anything, usually HHB Golds, or Apogee Gold Masters --

But is Golds a waste ??

Do ya know ??

Taiyo Yuden is the brand most mastering houses use for Gold Masters. You can purchase them as 'THATS' brand. I have no problems burning these up to 12X & having them read in all audio CD & DVD players. They produce very low error rates.

HHB I have heard are just rebranded Mitsui & probably the same with Apogee (rebranded) So why pay extra for a brand name when you can buy the real Mitsui, Mitsubishi or Taiyo for less? If you want to know what brand a CD-R is just use Nero's disk info utility in a PC it gives you the real manufacturer.

Wow,, thats good to know. I think I am going to try them out next time. And probably switch to using ONLY them.

Taiyo Yuden you say aye ?? So do they come in "Golds" as well ? If so, what is the TRUE difference between "Gold" CDR's and non-golds ??

And out of the Taiyo Yuden series which exact ones are the best to use for your Masters ?

I have been using the same CDRs for over 5 years, Taiyo Yuden. I get the ones by Microboards Technology, model no CDR-80ZYPA. I switched 1 time in between to some TDK but got about 5 coasters in 50 CDs and 3 rejects from plants because of errors, on the Taiyo Yuden I must have burned about 2000 and never ever a coaster or reject so I'm sticking with them.

Doesn't compatibility with the specific burner you are using determine whether you should use blue green or gold cd-r's?
