I use the Cedar DNS2000. Simply awesome. .X noise is good on hiss but can leave some horrible artifacts if used incorrectly. I also have Sonic NoNoise which is better than X-Noise for more broadband type noise. Hope this helps

I'll agree with Paul on CEDAR... nothing quite like it for salvaging your "average independant film" production audio. Also in no particular order I've used:

Waves C4
Wavearts MultiDynamics
EQ1 (as a notch)
Waves Denoise/DeCrackle (okay for some over modulation).

I'm curious to try the Cube-Tec stuff, but I'm afraid it will actually work and then no-one will want to pay proper attention to production sound!

P.S. Paul, love your work... yes I AM a geek... Tom Baker era!

Thanks for that. Yeah I forgot about the C4. I also use the Q10 for whines especially the bloody Tardis column which has melted and makes a hell of a whine. Also try the RVox for a slight gate. Just buy Waves and you'll get 75% covered.

All the best

PS any chance of a job in Canada Howard?

Try new Wave Arts Master Restoration Suite.
It's very powerful RTAS and AS plug ins. I found myself using it as much as I use my Sonic NoNoise. It is pretty cool when you can manual control so many parameters. It gives you more flexability than any other NR plug ins. Also there is a graphic representation for all available paramenters like threshold, attenuation, atack, release, amount e.t.c.
Be sure to check it out.

I tried the Sony Restoration Bundle as a demo and it was okay not brilliant. Another one you might want to try is a plugin called "SoundSoap" (i think its called that). I've heard some great comments on this on the DUC. The only thing you can do is demo them and try them out. It's all noise dependant. I find that not just one process will "fix" the problem. A Q10 to get rid of the whine and whistles, an xnoise next to get rid of most of the unwanted stuff then the Cedar to get rid of the xnoise artifacts.

Hope that helps and let us know what you find useful plug in wise

i really rate the sony oxford noise reduction. so easy to use, so quick and clean. the most easy to use, and fast one i've found yet, far superior to the waves. the sonic solutions de crackle is really good too. would love to try the cedar though

Down at Endemol we've been using the DNS 1000 on Deal or No Deal to clean up all sorts of background noise from moving light whistles, LED screen fan noise and air con. We've now got two in the gallery and one in the edit.
On a seperate note 'Sound soap' is useful as well. I've managed to lift dialogue away from being swamped by background ambiance/noise with it. Albeit only to a certain degree. Worth trying it out though.

how much is a cedar 2000 if you don't mind me asking? I've looked online but can't find a purchase price or even a rental rate for one.
