Default Re: Is the Avid IO fan quieter than the 192 fan?

What I do not understand though is, why don't they use a fan that is $10 more (at the most) and quiet, and charge the buyer $15 more for the unit? $15 really don't matter in that price range, I would think. And everyone would be happy.
Since this is such an obvious solution I wonder why instead they assume most of the buyers have machine rooms, so it doesn't matter how noisy they are. I find that to be a weird, ignorant and unnecessary mindless approach.

for what it's worth, after installing the latest 2.10 firmware on the omni (which was quite a lot of trouble in itself--but that's a little off topic here), the fan noise dropped considerably.

i had it sitting on top of a rack beside the console while setting it up and testing, and although much better after the update, i could still hear it. now it's installed in another rack further away and it's barely audible.

moral of the story is do the firmware upgrade, and rack it, and it should be fine.

It's not about the Omni, it's about the HD I/O. The fan noise of the Omni got a whole lot better after the update, that's true. But the HD I/O still is about as loud, as the Omni has been before.

At one of the places I work, they upgraded to the new HD I/O units. It´s only one per room and they are fitted in side racks under the Icon´s surfaces.
To be honest, I never heard the fans so far. Maybe because the racks are deep or it has to do with the rooms acoustics, but so far, no fan noise problems.

how long is the warranty on an HD I/o?

and

I agree - the fan in an HD I/O is ANNOYING.

and

I will swap the fans - once the boxes are out of warranty. I own 2.

Question - are the cores always color coded the same way? So replacing red with red and black with black - no possibility of wrongdoing here?
Most usually they are, but obviously there is no guarantee of that.

Red = positive DC power
Black = negative DC power

Don't know what other wires there may be, probably some kind of control trigger thing..?

Well, the replacement fan's wires are all black, so that's that.
So one has to look up, how the 3pin connectors usually are assigned.
The third wire of the 3 pin connector of the fan is for speed control.

The 4 pin connector of the HD I/O has only two wires assigned, the other two are empty.

That is easy then; the fan without speed control will likely operate at full speed at all times. Two black wires are DC power so worst thing that can happen is the fan rotates at wrong direction if the power input is not regulated.

Yes, always verify the direction of airflow after installing the new fan. Drawing heat INTO the box would be bad.

Yes, I am aware.
But I'm not going to do anything, until the case with Avid has come to a final conclusion.
