Thanks so much folks. I don't know why I even bother asking a reseller or manufacturer about their products when the answers are always right here.

Thanks again!

I can confirm - the Sony DDS-3 drive is self cleaning - no need for tapes

I'm not sure that the presence of a self cleaning mechanism obviates the need for regular cleaning with a tape: This is from Sony's web site:

"Q: How often should I use the cleaning cartridge to clean the Sony DDS drive tape path?

A: It is recommended that the Sony DDS tape drive is cleaned either every 24 hours of drum rotation or at least once a week. The drive Status LED will begin to flash (3.5 sec ON / 0.5 OFF) after 24 hours of drum rotation to request a cleaning cartridge. The Status LED will not stop flashing until a cleaning process has taken place.....
....For the SDT-5000 please use a Sony cleaning cartridge model DG5CL. For the SDT-7000 / SDT-9000 please use a Maxell cleaning cartridge model HS-4. If problem persists after cleaning, try another tape."

So, while the SDT9000 does have a self-cleaning mechanism, I believe they still recommend cleaning with a tape every 24 hours.

best,
rich

Borgbilly,

Get a Sony DGD15CL. I think WM Sales has them.

Rich,

Thanks for the info; and yes, my drive does give the status flashing to which your quote refers, so i stand corrected. I must add though, that in 2 years of daily use, it's never missed a file yet (without cleaning!)
