On one hand I want to use the S/PDIF input to the Masterlink, but if I use the analog XLR path, would I get a warmer sound?

There are two reasons I use the XLR's to my Masterlink:
1. Audio with heavy effects tend to sound cleaner, more analog, when going through the extra D/A~A/D step.
2. When I want to record a 48Khz/24bit mastered session to 44.1khz/16bit masterlink playlist. In this configuration, there is no worries or need for dithering. The D/A~A/D is a useful audio quantizer, so to speak.

This is not recommended for most styles of music, but certainly worth a try.
