G5 dual 2.3, OS 10.4.11 , HD 2 with 7.3.1.

This rig has the HD cards in the G5 and 4 UAD-1 cards + a powercore in a magma.

I've yet to come anywhere near whatever limitations this may have.
Not much incentive to spend the 5 figure sum it would take to upgrade to (for me) the same capabilities.

Quad 2.5 PPC

I was a bit disappointed by both Apple and now Digi for stopping support of the PPC. But to be perfectly honest, unless PT or Apple comes out with something that is an absolute "must have", I will just stick to my PT 8.0.1 and Quad PPC until it dies. I don't see any reason in the next year or two for an upgrade, my setup now works perfect.

Still have a DP 1.8 G5 w/ 4GB of RAM rocking solid on Tiger / 7.4 running the control room at the studio.

Would like to upgrade to LEO / PT 8 but 8.0.1 is really unstable, unscrollable, I'd HATE to leave this machine in "That State"

8.0.3 on my HD system at home, got "So many things right" from the fixes, and complaints of the user base, I really wish 8.0.3 would be the "Resting ground" for PPC on LEo 10.5.8

It IS supported on 10.5.8 on Intel, so it's not really Apple's issue, seeing as 8.0.3 is qualified for LEO And Snow LEO, it would have been nice to have kept this UB, and kiss off PPC on future versions that REQUIRED 10.6+

Those were my thoughts a few months ago, but now that I sold the G5 Quad and replaced it with a new Intel Quad, I find myself very satisfied with the decision.

The trusty old G5 served me well, it was the reliable workhorse during the difficult tech transition, and it was surely the best solution at that time. Those were great 4 years but now it was really time to step forward and forget the past. After all, the cards were already compatible (thanks Apple for bringing us PCI-express with the last G5 generation) so the upgrade was very smooth ride overall; I just bought the cheapest MP out there and swapped cards to the new box.

I strongly recommend the upgrade, if not now then perhaps within next 12 months? We all know 3-5 years is the "reliable" lifespan of a host computer so PPC hardware is already stretching it... At least for me, I do +50% live gigs so I might bang the boxes more than most of you

G5/10.4.11/PT 7.3.1 HD3 Accel PCIx

I would really like an upgrade that gave me more DSP headroom, but the silly PCIe crossgrade prices are not what I consider a compelling offer. So I try to keep this rig rolling, using lots of Digirack plugs instead of all the fancy ones I've bought over the past years.

With Avid doing mega reductions on the price of new HD rigs, why don't they do another round of extreme discounts on crossgrades?

Angry Re: Poll: How many still using PPC?

I'm using a Quad G5 2.5 here. Seems BS to charge for the upgrade and then stop support for PPC. Really tempted to sell my HD3 system. It seems less of an advantage having HTDM cards now with faster processors and with digidesigns terrible & expensive support, other platforms are looking more attractive.

We seem to be at 176...... next? I am sure that Digi has a formula to estimate the actual number of PPC users, based on representation here.

Just clock in with a number...and maybe system info. there are plenty of threads for "editorials"

lets keep it lean and mean. FF
