Question inserting hardware across part of a surround aux

Is there a clever way to do this?

I now have a complicated music 5.1 music mix....
note - not everything is hard panned in the 5.1 mix.

I have a "5.1 mix buss" that is assigned to a 5.1 aux... and the 5.1 aux is bussed to a 5.1 audio track to record my mix.

If possible - i'd like to take the L+R of the 5.1 aux and insert a hardware EQ across them..... and take the C and insert a mono hardware EQ across it.

this way when i record my mix... the LCR would be EQd with nice hardware EQ.

any way to do this?

I dont want to re-assign to 3 new discreet LCR busses... as some stuff is not hard panned....

delay compensation it on, of course

thanks

Just make a 5.1 insert, patch the comp and eq on the busses you want, and use direct patches for the others. Depending on the patchbay, your normals may even take care of it.This way they all "take the trip" but you're only processing the ones you want.

I have no idea what the effect of only compressing part of a 5.1 mix will though as I don't work in surround.

Heya

I'm inserting EQ - not compression.....

and I don't have a patchbay - (or 3 spare, unused converter i/o) so your suggestion won't work....

however Over at GearSlutz Rail posted this info:

Create 5 discrete mono Aux Tracks for your mix bus (grouped together) and assign that to your final 5.1 track. You can then use hardware inserts on the mono Aux Tracks.

I don’t quite understand him…. I posted back:

how do I "group" together 6 mono aux tracks?

and do I need to create more (mono) busses to route my mix thru these 6 new mono (grouped) auxes?

or.... ?

anyone else wanna chime in?

thanks.

He just means to make a Mix/Edit Group out of them in case you move one they all move, so your balance stays intact.

so is a way to do this:

- create 6 mono sub-paths in my "5.1 mix buss"

- create 6 mono sub-paths in my "5.1 record buss"

- route these sub paths to and from 6 mono aux tracks

- insert the mono hardware EQs on the LCR of these new aux tracks

and... in PT 7.4 HD (last CS) - is there a phase problem with routing audio -> busss then -> buss then -> mix record track

(or was that something else in an early version of PT8?)

Any other ways to do this - without a patchbay?
