Playlists and groups in 5.1

Can anyone explain fully how the new playlist system works in 5.1 with regard to groups. i.e. when other tracks in a group will follow a playlist selection and when they will not? They do both! unless my computer doesn't like 5.1.
p.s. I'm running a mix plus system on a G4.
