Default JBL 4408 Studio Monitors.....worth buying cheap?

I have a chance to pick up some JBL 4408 Studio Monitors for next to nothing in cost. Are these decent monitors?

If it's a friend take them home and try them out.
If not try to give them a listen with source material that you know so you understand what you are hearing.
Thing to remember about monitors is what important is how well you understand their sound.

THEY ARE DECENT. NOT AWESOME. KIND OF DRY....NOT A BIG BASS SOUND OUT OF THE 8" WOOFER, BUT ADD A SUBWOOFER WITH THEM AND YOU'D PROBABLY LIKE THE SOUND PRETTY WELL. GET AN ON/OFF SWITCH SO YOU CAN LISTEN WITH OUT THE SUB AND BACK AND FORTH. MY FAVORITE MONITORS UNDER $2000/PAIR ARE QUESTED FP11. AMAZINGLY CLEAR. THE JBLS WERE REAL POPULAR 10 YEARS AGO. NOW IT SEEMS YOU SEE A LOT OF GENELEC. IF THEY HAVE GRILLS ON, TAKE THEM OFF AND MAKE SURE THE FOAM SURROUNDS ARE IN GOOD SHAPE. IF THEY AREN'T YOU CAN GET THEM RE-FOAMED FOR USUALLY AROUND $40 PER SPEAKER. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!

If you can get them for next to nothing, they would be worth having as an alternative reference if you decided not to use them as your mains.
