Default Trouble panning in pro tools 8

Hi i'm new to pro tools and my imac but i've recorded 4 guitar tracks and i'm trying to pan 1 hard left and 1 hard right and the other 2 kinda in the middle. It's not letting me pan! When i move the pan slider thing it just kinda makes the guitar quieter but not an actual pan. What am i doing wrong?

Not the slider but where it says pan with the green arrows. I try taking it to 100% right and it still comes out of both speakers.

Just wanted to add here -- in case others are searching frantically like me, last night--in the case that you are using an adapter, you need a TRS 1/4in to 1/8in adapter, which has TWO bands around it, not the mono adapter (TS), which has one. If you use the TS adapter, it will come out in mono and you won't be able to pan.
