PTIII or Project on Apple 8500/120?
Will it work, and if so what version of Pro Tools and Mac OS should I/can I use? Also, what memory requirements are there, and should I get a G3/G4 processor upgrade?

Man, you can get a nice p111 for like $600 bux. Or for that much you can get a slow as sh*t obsolete mac. I upgraded my mac to a g4/400 with 256mb ram.Still a p3 850 runs circles around what Ive got. I dont think its worth it upgrading unless youve already got the mac. The bus speed is SLOOOW on the old machines. Bear in mind I am a mac guy. Im not trying to mislead you. Its just that for the level youve budgeted yourself theres not much in mac land. If i were in your positiond I'd get the fastest pc I could afford. |

I agree with Robert. But here is another way to look at it as well . . .
If you don't have the machine yet, or even if you do, for the cost of a G3 upgrade and enough RAM to be worthwile (at least 192 or 256, less is problematic), you could find a used B&W g3. It ain't no spanky new G4, but it will do very well. Also, my 8600 gets slightly more plug-in instances than the PTIII machine (beige G3) that the university here has. Both Project and PT III are unsupported at this time, and future software will not run on them (5.1 has been alluded to for PTIII, but I wouldn't hold my breath). Anyway, a used B&W with an 001 may be a better and more cost effective solution depending on what you want/need to do. Hope this helps. ------------------ Shawn Parr Assistant Audio Director - Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Owner - Muskrat Studios

Re: PTIII or Project on Apple 8500/120?
OK--I actually have an 8500/132--I got a G3/400 Chip with PTLE/Digi.001. Also have an IBM & Seagate Barracuda 18 GB SCSI HD's. You must have 2 HD's--(Internal only)ATA or SCSI--(No PCI HD's)
I have 240 mbRam and I can run with 1 Realverb--1 Dverb-1 Truverb-and the L1+ on the master fader with 24 trax + 3 stereo auxs for the reverbs. With audiosuite you can process unlimited instances of plugins. The 120 or 132 CPU is not going to give you enough horsepower and you will have to upgrade to a G3/G4 chip. I would shoot myself before I would ever consider using a PeeCee----Reason being that the PC's Do Not have very many plug-ins available, and The Waves Gold Plugs are Indispensible for any kind of great recording quality... If you are just playing games then go with the PC---If you are serious then the mac 8500 + processor upgrade + PTLE/.001 + Waves Gold will work just fine.... ...JT
