No Midi out 002 yet light blinks?
I'm experiencing a strange problem. I'm on XP with a 002 rack and an ozone midi controller. I can see the midi light triggering on the 002 but cant get any sound out the the rack. I'm going to computer via usb and I've double checked all my connections. I get sound out PT if its any audio, just no midi. (I've tried various other software with the same results - Logic 5.5, Reason 2.5) I'm semi-new to the PT world but I know that Ive got to set my input on the midi track to Ozone and output to digidesign port 1 channel 1. It just seems strange the midi light blinks on note on and note off, but no midi actually is heard? Any ideas....
Also I did mess around with my win.ini file when the Logic site recommended it to get the ozone to work with Logic. But I think it should be fine, its all on. MidiIn_In_Ozone=1 MidiOut_Out_Ozone=1 MidiIn_Digidesign_Digi_002_port_1=1 MidiOut_Digidesign_Digi_002_port_1=1 MidiOut_Digidesign_Digi_002_port_2=1 Thanks. |

Re: No Midi out 002 yet light blinks?
I think you are confused about how MIDI works. MIDI tracks don't produce sounds on their own, they are just instructions for sound modules or softsynths, which do produce the sounds.
Do you have a sound module or softsynth hooked up?

Re: No Midi out 002 yet light blinks?
This is what I know about midi communication - [Its a status and usually a couple data bytes which are actually values being sent from the midi controller to specify the parameters of the sound module.] Pro Tools and Logic both show their midi tracks lighting up when I play and the 002 does too. I have all channels transmitting from my controller and a softsynth selected in Logic (theres a bunch of them). Are there any built in softsynths in Pro tools? Im just perplexed by this because I've used midi in protools before. I remember it defaulted to a standard piano noise when I used it in PT. What would be a good softsynth or softsampler to buy to run in PT? I mostly want to trigger my own samples but others would be good too. Thanks.

Re: No Midi out 002 yet light blinks?
Kontakt by Native Instruments is the sampler I prefer.
IK Multimedia Sampletank has a free version that you can try out, but it is kind of limited in what it can do. Did you buy the 002 recently? If so it should have come with a free version of sampletank, and a version of Reason Adapted that has a whole bunch of softsynths, including a sampler, and is a great way to get started. The full version of Reason is a very cost effective program, too. for the money, you get quite a lot.

Re: No Midi out 002 yet light blinks?
Thanks spk, I've tried Reason. I can make a pretty decent song in it but it always sounds destractingly computerish to me. But I'll give Kontakt a try. Where do I get started to understanding how to use softsynths like Kontakt inside of PT? I do have that sampletank cd here too but havent opened it. I've got this midi project due for school and I was hoping to use PT or Logic or something more powerful than Reason but since its due tomorrow, I'll probably fall back on that. My Ozone actually likes Reason.

Re: No Midi out 002 yet light blinks?
Have you checked out the DiskFlix? They have one for sampletank, and one for Reason Adapted. I don't think it goes in depth, but it's a good starting place.
Also, check out my website (in my sig below); I've got some help pages that might get you started as well, one of which is all about using softwynths in Pro Tools.

Wow, diskflix is a really cool thing. I wish I knew about this site and your site from the start. The hardest part for me is just finding the information, not understanding it. Thanks again.
