Re: PCIe SSD cards and Mac Pro upgrades
It can be done that way, but it's a lot more complicated when you do it that way. There's always a risk of applying to much pressure to the CPUs when you go that route, plus everything has to be tightened down perfectly, there's just a bunch of problems that could be had by going that route. Deliding the CPUs makes it a piece of cake for install and all of those potential pitfalls become irrelevant.

Re: PCIe SSD cards and Mac Pro upgrades
Yes I’ve seen that, but I have a friend that used an iron on two sets of CPU:s with success, so I think I’m gonna try that method, if you don’t have any other advice.

Re: PCIe SSD cards and Mac Pro upgrades
Anybody using the following?:
8x 16GB (128GB) Micron DDR3 ECC RAM Mac Pro 4,1 5,1 1333 Mhz PC3-10600R Those are less expensive than the Samsungs right now, and are supposedly the same quality. Good choice?

Re: PCIe SSD cards and Mac Pro upgrades
Thanks for all help and advice so far!
I’m now shopping for parts. Are all CPUs like the following compatible with cMP 4,1 / 5,1, or are there any incompatible models?; 2x Intel Xeon X5680 12M Cache, 3.33 GHz, 6.40 GT/s 2x Intel Xeon X5690 12M Cache, 3.46 GHz, 6.40 GT/s

Re: PCIe SSD cards and Mac Pro upgrades
With two HyperX Predator drives; one 480GB and one 960GB, how would you distribute work load?
1. Use the 960GB for sample streaming only, the 480GB for OS/boot only, and another SATA/SSD drive for Pro Tools projects. 2. Partition the 960GB; eg 800 for sample streaming and 160 for Pro Tools projects, the 480GB for OS/boot. 3. Use the 960GB for sample streaming only, partition the 480GB; eg 300 for OS/boot and 180GB for Pro Tools projects.

Re: PCIe SSD cards and Mac Pro upgrades
There is absolutely no point in partitioning SSD, it may even be counter-productive to do so. Just use it for two purposes if you want to.

Re: PCIe SSD cards and Mac Pro upgrades
If you're streaming samples then a RAID 0 array is absolutely the way to go.

Re: PCIe SSD cards and Mac Pro upgrades
Maybe not but that's a theoretical maximum. Does your Mac's PCIe bus support that much throughput?
I was referring to the likes of a Samsung EVO or in my case fast Crucial SSDs. Sample streaming is considerably smoother and puts less strain on the CPU in the case of Kontakt. You get a lot fewer -9171 errors.
