Default What the hell is dalwdm.sys? (Rail?)

I' ve read on many post that this should be deleted from the system. I'm having some freeze-up, so I'm considering this. what is it and what does it do?
Also, I can't get audio from Nero now, which I think I need either Wavedriver or ASIO for...Do I need to download thes from Digi? I'm running 6.1.1, upgraded from the 6.1 disc that came with the system.

It's the driver which is used by the DAE engine.. you can't just delete it without first uninstalling all the programs which require it (Pro Tools, the ASIO driver and the WaveDriver).

So when you advised someone to uninstall it, it's so that they can get a truely clean install on Pro Tools? I assume that the driver gets re-installed with the system software.

Correct.. the problem is that during an uninstall it's not removed.. and there's the possibility of the new one not replacing it.. which may mean an older version is on the system which is incompatible with the newer versions of Pro Tools or the ASIO or WaveDriver. By manually deleting it first you ensure that the right version is installed.

I was having some problems (that turned out to be a bad processor) so I reformated my C drive, installed 6.1, then upgraded to 6.1.1 online. Are you saying that this driver is the 6.1 version? If so, what do I need to do?

No I'm not sayng that.. usually the new file replaces the old.. but sometimes people have installed the incorrect versions on top of other versions.. and to start with a fresh slate I tell them to delete dalwdm.sys -- otherwise there's no knowing what's on their system.

If you had a mismatch.. Pro Tools and the drivers wouldn't work.

BTW which approved FireWire card do you have installed? If you're having freezes while using Pro Tools.. you more than likely have an incompatible FireWire card or an IRQ conflict... or an incompatible motherboard.

My firewire card is the SIIG, and my mobo is the ASUS A7V333, ran like a champ with 5.3.1 My system seems to work fine until...these freezes are during mixing. I'm wondering if this is a conflict with IK stuff

Amplitue and Sampletank on the same sesion can cause a freeze depending on the sequence of inserting in PT and the sequence of opening instruments in Sampletank. Eventually the sequence will get PT to freeze. Run ST or AT but never both unless you don't change anything.

Rail: do you know if doing this fixes the problem where your machine is unable to restart, shutdown,etc..? And do you know if reinstalling everything after this procedure brings the problem back? Regards, Andrιs
