Default Phantom Power

Hi all

As I understand it, some mics require phantom power to be enabled and some don't (condenser vs dynamic). Is there any drawback of enabling phantom power on a channel with a dynamic mic? Only reason I ask is that, with an SM58, I did a bit of recording - it all went well. When I unplugged it from my 002r, I noticed the phantom power switch was on.

So...is there any point in turning it off?

Paul

No, you're ok, it's ribbon mics that you have to be careful of.

You should definately go re-record everything is you had +48 on a dynamic!!

Just kidding, phantom power won't hurt a dynamic mic. A loud "pop" could hurt your monitors if they are turned up when you connect/disconnect the mic with +48v. Like was said above, when working with ribbon mics, it is a good idea to keep phantom off. Phantom power can harm some older ribbon mics.

Hi

Thanks for the replies chaps. I can't imagine I'll be using ribbon mics anytime soon. Good to know it's all ok.

OK then...

Can you recommend a ribbon mic (cheap) as a decent all-rounder?

Cascade Fathead or Fathead II are both very good(buy direct from Cascade). The Cascade DR-2 dual ribbon is excellent on guitar amps and fiddle. The Fatheads are a close second and can make good drum overheads given the right acoustics in the room. The DR-2 is symmetrical so it makes a great figure 8 for MS recording too. Both are under $300. If you get on Cascade's email list, they have sales from time to time and Fatheads can be had for $175! I have a friend checking out the 2 MXL ribbons right now and so far he has been impressed with both(and he has about $300,000 worth of mics to compare with). Check the Cascade stuff here:
