Any multiband compressor can be a gate if the ratio is set high enough.
And you might want to use more than 2 bands (low end you want to keep and everything else) because you might want different (knees) ratios/attack speed/release time for higher bands to make it sound more natural. And the crossfilter between bands might be tweaked. Lots to play with.

Boz Digital’s Gatey Watey is a frequency-dependent gate. Might work. Still not Apple Silicon native tho.

Works pretty well! Best solution yet. Thankyou - the evolution to search phrase 'multigate' got the bingo. At least so far ... the demo video seems to hve more parametrs available than the demo plug ...

Have you tried applying the filter via clip based fx and then using a crossfades as "attack"/"release" ?

This is the closest to what I was looking for although a bit too basic parameter wise. I'd have to use it in conjuction with a more traditional gate to shape the way I would want. They are working on a silicon version.

This is why i love the DUC ... thanks all for your contributions and ideas! FYI - for the tubular bells I couldnt rescue them well enough so I used a sample to replace it that sounded pretty much identical. But for toms and snares either the Boz Gatey Watey, or the aixdsp multi gate will work well. I mix tons of live records and I wish I'd asked earlier!

Synthesisers have this as a pretty much standard feature. A filter, set to Low Pass, and an "envelope" set to modulate the fall of rate of the filter.

This doesn't help you, though if you can find what you're looking for if you look at audio filters based on this synthesizer process. Waves Metafilter for example or the filters from Artuiria.

Metafilter doesn't have an envelope as such, but it can be set to Follow the input, and set it up the sequencer or a saw LFO to automate the fall of the filter.
