Default Issues with 10.3.6 and a Question About Co-install

I'm excited about PT 11 and am prepping up.

I'm currently running PTHDN 10.3.5 on Mac OS 10.6.8 and its solid. I use partitioned SSDs running DP on one with the Avid hardware, and keeping safeties of trusted earlier PT versions on other partitions. That setup works great.

I've setup a new SSD with 10.3.6/ML10.8.3 on one partition and 11.xx will be on one of the others. I don't mind rebooting, but I'm unclear if going between 10.3.6 and 11.xx works the same that way as with the co-install. For now, I feel safer keeping them separate.

On a new drive I installed ML and the combo ML 10.8.3 updater. I did the proper procedures and
turned off all the fluffy ML extras. I installed PTHD 10.3.6, PSP Springbox, and three fabfilter plugs. I booted up and got rolling on a project with eight tracks of B3 @ 96kHz with the Avid 1 band EQ on each track and Springbox (which sounds awesome!) on an Aux. After a few setup changes I got rolling with a 128 buffer, which I usually track with.

Much to my surprised the -9171 error soon popped up. It happened a few times so I upped to
256 and still got the error. It was my first checkout of Springbox, so I replaced it with Avid's
spring emu and still had issues with the lower buffer settings.

I rebooted to my 10.6.8/10.3.5 SSD and opened the same session and it ran flawlessly at 128 with and w/o Springbox.

For now, 10.3.6 and ML 10.8.3 will only be a transfer station to 11 and
I'll stick with 10.6.8/10.3.5 for work. I'll also do some more testing with 10.3.6 and ML 10.8.3.

Is it correct to conclude that co-installation is a convenience and not a necessity?

Yes, the whole point of 10.3.6 is so you CAN have both installed on the same drive. Nothing says you NEED to if you don't need both versions available. Like, if you do a session in 11 but decide you need to tune the vocal, you can open the session in 10.3.6 and use Melodyne(which doesn't work in 11).
