Yeah, exactly. I want to do an analog like gain staging while recording and mixing, especially when using analog hardware as inserts and on the 2bus. But also with plugins it is certainly not a good idea to slam with , let's say, -6db FS...

So I want to keep my signals while recording and mixing at around +4 dBu (+0 VU) which is -18 dBFS at my system. For this the old pro tools metering isn't helpful at all (too fast peaks and barely visible levels). So i thought maybe the new VU style metering would help, but I am not sure: for a signal with lots of fast transient (like a kick) the VU metering is to slow...

I'm pretty sure you know this, but that's because the VU is really there to represent the average loudness of the material.
