Pro Tools 2023.12 Integrated Renderer Issue
Keeping it brief and hoping for a quick fix:
At AES NY 2023 we got to see a preview of the new version of Pro Tools (advertised as 2023.12) with the new integrated Dolby Atmos Renderer. For some reason, this renderer only supports 7.1.4 OR 9.1.6 layouts, but NOT 9.1.4. I've calibrated dozens of rooms for Dolby here in Europe and a large number of those studios (especially for Atmos Music) have 9.1.4 setups, since the Wides make a big difference. I know there probably won't be a chance for this to make it into 2023.12, but is there a possibility to fix this for 2024.03 or something please? Should I submit a separate bug report? Thank you! |

Re: Pro Tools 2023.12 Integrated Renderer Issue
Those studios should just add two more height speakers. Problem solved!

Re: Pro Tools 2023.12 Integrated Renderer Issue
Not really needed and/or wanted to create or experience enveloping music mixes and playback.
Having the flexibility to enjoy all speaker formats for Atmos UP to 9.1.6 in PT Ultimate would be appreciated and (to be quite honest) expected. |

Re: Pro Tools 2023.12 Integrated Renderer Issue
You want to submit a "bug report" on something not released and you aren't even a beta tester? Not to mention, isn't a "bug" at all?
Might want to reconsider how things work. They've already mentioned the integrated renderer will not replace an external renderer. That answers your worries.

This does in fact not answer my worries, no, but thanks for your enthusiasm. I'm not looking to replace the external renderer and I'm well aware of the fact that the integrated one is not aimed to be a full replacement. Since 9.1.4 is already a supported format in PT Ultimate for auxes and busses, would you consider that a bug to be fixed by your 'logic' then? Having the same formats that are already available in PT for bussing also available as outputs seems reasonable to me. Bringing back the ability to work on HDX/HD Native without Aux I/O is one of the major benefits of having an integrated renderer, so flexibilty in speaker configs does play a role in that. And it not being released shouldn't stop us from talking about it early, since that hopefully gets it into a development pipeline sooner rather than later. |

It's a feature request.

Fair enough. So, if we can get past the semantics, we can agree that having 9.1.4 as a direct output format in PT Ultimate but not via the Integrated Renderer is definitely an oversight in need of correction, right? |

The integrated renderers have always had limitations compared to the standalone renderer applications. From memory, while Logic Pro, Da Vinci Resolve and Nuendo all support larger bus widths internally (9.1.4, 9.1.6, etc), they all top out at 7.1.4 speaker layouts. The 9.1.4 busses in Nuendo don't even work with Atmos. Those extra two channels are left center, and right center screen channels, not atmos wides. A lot of this stuff won't be up to Avid. It gets dictated by Dolby.

That's true, yes, the others so far were limited to 7.1.4 speaker layouts. I just found it odd to support up to 9.1.6 now, but skip the step in between. And the speaker positions for 9.1.4/9.1.6 bussing in PT are definitely already using the Wides, not Lc/Rc. |
