Default Control 24 and Digi Rack 003

Ok here's a question...
Is it possible to record through the Control 24 onto the DigiRack 003 to Protools LE. Can I use D-sub cables for this?

I have a control 24 with an 002 R, and I believe it's pretty much the same connection wise as the 003 - meaning yes you amy- D-Subs- however- I beleiev lacking a patch bay you're limited to using 1 - 8 on the control 24 in order to use 1-8 on the 003

I run all 16 outputs to a patchbay, normalized so that 1-8 are the normalized/default routing unless I patch otherwise

If using outputs 1 - 4 from the control 24 into inputs 1 - 4 on the oo4, remember you're using both pre-amps (noway know to get around this) - which ever preamp you believe to be better, turn the other one down to minimize gain staging

I have that combination, and the answer is "sort of". You can come out of up to 8 preamp outs on the Control 24, into the TRS inputs on the 003R. Then you can come out of the 003R back to the Control 24 so you can use the output and talkback section. But - the 003R preamps have much better specs than the ones in the Control 24. So you may want to use the 003R preamps instead for the first 4 channels.

So unless you have an ADAT converter or spdif, the Control 24 isn't going to get you any more channels than what exist in the 003R. Still, it's a very workable setup even if you never use the preamps at all. 24 automated faders, talkback, lotsa buttons - what's not to like?

The other 8 preamps could be patched into the lightpipe input of the 003 by using an old ADAT machine as a converter.

Yes. The ADAT optical connection is an 8 channel digital protocol, so any unit that can take 8 analog audio signals and convert to digital(Like an ADAT recorder) should work fine. Don't forget that there must be a master clock in any setup that combines digital signals. Usually, the 002/003 is laved to the device that is coming in via the ADAT connection(go to Hardware setup and select Optical as the sync source, and make sure the external device is set to the proper sample rate and bit depth. Such as 24 bit, 44.1K)

To ustilize the monitor section and all 16 pre's, you're gonna need a minimum of 4 DSub to TRS

1 for Pro Tools Sources In
1 for Monitors Out
1 for Line Out 1-8
1 for Line Out 9-16

Get good cables. Figure on at least $240 new.

Should be able to find em for about $40-50 each used

I recommend getting some pretty long ones too.

You can get some fairly inexpensive converters to utilize the Lightpipe in of the 002R/003R or whatever.

Behringer ADA8000 is about the cheapest, but keep in mind you're using converters in a $200 piece of equipment. I'd only use these for NON-CRITICAL sources

Otherwise there are many others on the market up to $2000+

Make sure that whatever you get is actually gonna work properly.

Some devices WILL NOT route the ins directly to Lighpipe out unless hooked up via their interface (ie, firewire, USB)
Others will pass via their Driver Utility, but will still need to be hooked up. I'd avoid those as they can conflict with PT

You will want something stand-alone for this

I just remember that I have an Audiophile 192 and it has spidf. Do you guys think its possible to connect the 003 to the audiophile 192 via spidf to run protools le?

I guess the setup would be like this:
Control 24 --> 003 --> Audiophile 192-->Protools LE
