Default Learn Pro Tools on my current version 9 or upgrade to 10 first???

Hello,

I searched the forums and did not find much related to this . . . If I missed something appropriate, please point it out . . .

I currently have a copy of Pro Tools 9 and an Mbox 2 running on an early 2011 Unibody MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.3.

I have used pro Tools off and on for several years but ONLY know the very basics of Pro Tools. I have some time on my hands and would like to spend part of it really digging into Pro Tools.

I also have a copy of the book "Pro Tools 101 Official Courseware" for version 9.

Is it best to go ahead and first upgrade to version 10 and spend the $300 for the upgrade and $30/$40 for the newer version 10 of the book or go ahead and learn version 9??? Is learning 9 first and then upgrading to 10 going to make getting comfortable with version 10 more difficult in anyones opinion??

I am not not sure how much of the interface has changed from version 9 to 10.

Thanks

John

The interface and splash screen have not changed from 9 to 10. If you look at the comparisons between the two, there are not a lot of differences. "clip Gain" being one. And if your using HD, then things like RAM Cache. The only big difference jumping from 9 to 10 would be the naming conventions they changed. "regions" are now "clips". Things like that. The majority of the basic PT functions are close enough that your safe to learn 9 and upgrade to 10 when you can.

there are some name changes between 9 and 10
they are covered on pg. 8 of the what's new in PT10 http://akmedia.digidesign.com/suppor...s_10_73409.pdf

if you learn 9 going to 10- or 11 should not be any problem

If I were you I would stick with 9 and wait for PT11 to come out. There are sound reasons (pardon the pun) to do this, not least of all the fact that you are a beginner by the sound of it.

PT11 is most likely going to be a 64Bit application which will offer more power specifically if working with VI's. The money you save bypassing v10 could go toward a better setup in the near future. By the time it comes out, you will have saved more money and be in a better position to use more of it's features.

V9 offers all the basic requirements of learning how to use Pro Tools. If you learn to master v9 there is no reason you couldn't use any subsequent version for the foreseeable future....the principles are the same.

In fact the same could even be said about earlier versions as the user interface has remained predominantly the same throughout.

Also what I have found REALLY helpful is some apps on iTunes. Search either macprovideo or appdesigner and there are some tutorials on everything from vocals to mix and mastering. They cost about $10 each but each tutorial has up to 4 hours of tips, tricks and insights taught by professional engineers and producers. Well worth the money.

My understanding of protools was limited to basic recording. This has opened up a lot of areas I didn't know about and has helped me no end.

Thanks for the input.

Based on what I have seen so far, I will stick with version 9 for now and upgrade to 11 later down the road.

THANKS

I have 9 and I am in a similar situation. I was thinking of upgrading to 10 around October so if 11 came out like 10 did I could upgrade for free. However, I am hearing it will be awhile before 11 comes out and more focus is on the hardware (which would require more programing within itself). Still may buy 10 but it will probably be in November now.

After years of working with Logic and a brief time with Studio One, I've made the leap into Pro Tools 9 (started with MP9 a couple of weeks ago. Crossgrade arrives this week) and I deliberately picked PT 9 to start primarily because I wanted to spend as little $$$ as I could before the 64-bit version arrives while learning how to use the software/

Based on how well the MP9 version has performed with my current hardware & what I read about full-on PT9, I may very well stick with it till I "have" to upgrade. YMMV :)
