Actually, from everything that I've read and heard, 10.8.4 makes things better and not worse. Some even say that is an ultimate requirement for PT11 in real life...

upgraded from 10 and had the same issue (just bought 10 1.5 yrs ago). 1st found out 1st gen iLok wouldn't work, so bought iLok2 then PT11 won't open. Running 10.7.5 so I bought 10.8 now waiting for delivery of that. Now waiting to hear back from support. Soooo tired of getting F'd in the wallet by avid. IF there was another option I'd jump ship in a heartbeat. Keep you posted on how it gets resolved. I'm guessing more money.

Once you have that 10.8.4 installed, license on a 2nd generation iLok, and latest PT installed, you should be fine.
