distorted drum overhead advise
Hi,
Received a project from another studio to mix and the right hand side of the stereo overheads is quite badly distorted, mostly the hi-end/hi-hat and cymbals! the lower stuff (the drums) is still probably usable. so i'm trying to decide whats best, should i duplicate the overheads and use a lo-pass filter on one track to give me overheads for just the lower parts(the drums!) then use just the left signal on another track for the cymbals, and hope the hi-hat track will balance out the right side of the overs?? Any other suggestions or thoughts Chris

Re: distorted drum overhead advise
Hi
I'm liking your thinking but I suppose you could always distort the other side to match then soften it all off and go for a dirty sounding kit. depends what sort of music it is I guess. |

Re: distorted drum overhead advise
Hey Crizdee,
You could always try an MS decoder on the overheads. Try EQ'ing the distorted channel so that the top end is rolled off a bunch and use that as the 'M' channel (usually the left side in a stereo track), and use the clean track as the 'S' channel (usually right). What you'll get is a stereo result that gets wider when there's more activity in the clean ('S' channel), and more MONO sounding when there's not as much... I use this trick sometimes for synth pads that have envelopes that are completely different between the left and right sides. Hey, it's worth a shot... Cheers, eh? |

Re: distorted drum overhead advise
if you have the space, re-amp the drums back out to the studio with some mic's
