Well you can see from my public profile that I am 45 years young, but I am not fishing your age here.

To the point.

You obviously want to have a limiter as last step. My go-to plugins are Sonnox Limiter or Massey Limiter. Sonnox has a sound of its own and Massey sounds great on heavy stuff.

I am also a big fan of Sonnox Inflator inserted just before limiter. Again, it has a sound of its own and I could easily call it a "make it sound better button" or something like that.

Before that I either use Sonnox EQ (smooth) or Empirical Labs BigFrEQ (tight).

See the pattern here? I tend to use a lot of Sonnox on my master.

If you're just after a limiter, then the AVID Pro Limiter is fine (way better than Maxim), and might be included in your Protools subscription. Worth checking.

If you're after more than limiting then iZotope Ozone is quite widely used, and covers all things mastering, not just limiting... though as others have said re AI mastering, better to use your ears.

Personally I use the Newfangled Audio mastering plugins (Elevate, Punctuate etc), which I really like.

I do think there's a massive difference between a plugin that you might stick on the end of your 2 bus to get maximum level, (so that a mix is comparably loud to a mastered track) and actual mastering though. There's a place for both (and I do both), but they're not the same thing.

Checkout the iZotope “Are You Listening” tutorials on mastering. There are quite a few series.
