Default Neumann KM184

Has anyone used the Neumann KM184, and what are your thoughts on it?

Thanks

We've owned a pair for only two months. Applications thus far have included drum overheads in x-y coincident pair, and steel any nylon string acoustic guitar. In comparison to the other small diaphragm condensers we've used in similar application, namely the Octava MC012, the KM 184 seems superior. Areas of improvement included overall definition, excellent upper bandwidth without sizzle, and low self-noise. This is our early impression, at least. Preamps used with the KM 184, incidentally, have been V72 and True Systems Precision 8.

I still use other mics for these applications as well, in spite of liking the KM184. These include Beyer M160 ribbons, Gefel UM92, AT 4050, and Beyer 740. As you know, there's always benefit in having a selection of good mics.

Best wishes,

John Caldwell

We have a pair and love them. We use them on acoustic guitar, drum overheads, audience pick up for live recordings, and anything else that we can throw at them. They have very low noise and a brightish high definition sound that sits well in a mix.

Well worth the price IMHO.

Regards

Bill.

I've been able to directly compare them with the original km84's and have to say that they don't really compare to the originals. I think the main thing is over all definition. The KM 84's seem to have better hi to mid hi freq response. Both seem to lack low end freq response. I guess it really also depends on what you'd be using them for, but in general I think you could find a more versatile mic for the same amount of money.
