Default Using Externally created MIDI with Strike - Need Help

I have a mid file that was created by a drummer playing a midi kit. The file was imported into Protools and then used to create an audio track using EZDrummer and it sounded incredible!

I wanted to test Strike using the same file. I imported the file into an instrument track, output it to an audio track and set the instrument track midi output selector to Strike 1-2 so it would play Strike in kit mode instead of triggering patterns.

It worked but not like the track I heard with EZDrummer. The snare on Strike was more of a constant "roll" and a lot of the cymbols sounded off.

Could anyone offer any advice?

The EZDrummer track really sounded good (very real). I'd like to try to use Strike like this with a real drummer playing a midi kit.

This is just a guess, since I don't use Strike, but I'd bet its because of which kit sounds are assigned to which notes. The MID file is merely playing a note sequence...you could hear it on a piano sound, for example. So the question is, what kit sounds are assigned to which notes in Strike and can you edit those? If you can, then you should be able to get the sounds you want to play in the way you want it off that MID file.

You may have Kick Drum-1 assigned to C1 in Strike, but Kick2 is the one you really want, etc. As I said, this is just a guess, but maybe will help.

You might look at EzPlayer FREE. It is a plugin that organizes your drum MIDI data and converts it to the various drummer sampler formats (including Strike).

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded it and have been trying to get it to work but no luck. Have you tried this with stike?

If that SMF isn't mapping to your liking then modify it. Remapping the SMF would be far easier than reassigning Strike.

Just click the Mini Reference Keyboard and move the selection to your liking.

I'm sorry, I don't quite follow you Filosofem.

What is "SMF" and how do I remap it?

Standard MIDI File. The Pitch is what you want to modify not the Timing. So select a pitch (C4) and move it a semi-tone up or down to the correct Strike Hit.

In what way doesn't it work for you? It does work for me with Strike.

I would say though that the strength of Strike is not as a highly detailed drum kit, e.g. EZDrummer, BFD, etc. IMO, Strike is best when used with the internal patterns, using complexity and intensity and jamming, etc. Find a pattern that's close to what you're looking for then edit it or change the kit. More like an advanced drum machine.

Agreed. Strike is more of a pattern triggering tool, than a note triggering tool.
