Anyone using Opteron 165-185?
I was thinking of getting an opteron 170 aince its only $180 now and it has great overclocking ability with the DDR500 ram that i have. I won't overclock unless i felt i needed to, But i know alot of these chips get to 2.6ghz+ from 2.0Ghz... Anyways.. I was wondering if some people had this chip or somethign in the 100 series dual cores and waht your DaveC and DaveC II tests were.. Thanks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I looked through this post, but I couldn't find anything about a quad system using the Opteron 165. I definitely do not need the horsepower that you guys do, but I use a lot of soft synths and need to record at the lowest buffer setting. For the sake of saving a lot of cash, is it possible to build a quad system using the 165? If so, can I use the Tyan mobo? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Tyan motherboard ( Tiger K8WE (S2877)) that we're using here is a 940 socket and takes the 2xx series Opterons. The Opteron 165 is a 939 socket. There is a Tyan board that accepts the 165 but it isn't a dual socket, quad core. I don't know if anyone has built a system with that mb or processor. Go to tyan.com and look through the boards. You might be better off to build something more along the lines of the original Allenstein. Read the beginning of the best desktops thread for that info. You could however build a "quad" and only use one processor; add another processor later if you choose. For lots of synths you might consider a larger amount of RAM. If and when the prices stabilize or drop again, a dual core Opteron 265 or 270 should be around the same price as the 165 you mention. I bought my 265s (each) for nearly the same as I find the 165 currently priced at. Some places still have the 265s listed at nearly the same price as 165s; they're just back-ordered. All that could change between my typing this and you reading it, though. Check all that out. It's just some of what I have researched during my journey with the quad. I'm no expert. I just play one on this forum.

Re: Anyone using Opteron 165-185?
oh cool.. thanks.. that does help[.. I'm thinking of getting an Opteron 170(2.0ghz) and with my DDR500 running buss at 500 and chip at 2.4 or 2.5 I've read taht this chip goes up to 2.8 with good air cooling.. and up to 2.6 with Stock HSF... So i think I'll be safe at 2.4 or 2.5... Anyways.. thanks for that post its exactly what i awas looking for.

Re: Anyone using Opteron 165-185?
I just got my Opteron 170 and A8N-SLI Premium up and running.
I want to get it to 2.4, but don't know how yet. Using the 10% overclock BIOS setting I have it running @ 2.2ghz. My ram is 2 x 1GB Samsung standard issue PC3200. Setup was a breeze once I found out what I needed to install and update. I'm also going to get the Zalaman CPU fan and 2 GPU fans to quiet things down. The stock AMD HS and fan aren't bad, but the fans on my dual 6600GTs sound like my wife's blow dryer on the high setting. I found some good links on how to OC, but don't have the time to read through everything. I just want my MHZ, Vcore, and mem divider setting to get to 2.4... Good choice on the chip....you did your homework. If you have a DFI board, you can get it to 3.0. DK

Re: Anyone using Opteron 165-185?
I have an Abit A8V So I'm not goiing too crazy becasue its not the greatest for overlocking. I've acctually seen on the abit forums about people over locking this chip with the same board i have and they's gotten it to 2.67 on stock voltage and using the stock HSF... so I'm going to go to 2.5 and leave it at that.. Not goig to be greedy.. and since my Ram is DDR500.. and its supposed to run at 250 instead of 200 like DDR400 I'm probably going to run it at its native speed all the time.
Opteron 170 @ 2.5ghz and Ram at 250mhz(500)... it should be a big sdifference from 2.0 and 400
