Mackie control and Mbox
I know someone who has an mbox and is planning on getting either the baby HUI or the mackie control for it. I think they both operate via MIDI, and I'm pretty sure the mbox doesn't have MIDI. Is his best option just to get a USB MIDI interface or something similar? Will ProTools recognize it?

Protools pretty much recognizes every midi-port you connect to your system. And yes...the mackie control and baby-HUI use MIDI, and i think they want a dedicated set of midi-input/output. I have a JLCooper CS-10, and it works great using the midi-ports of my soundblaster.
