Default Direct Box or... Quick Poll.

M-Audio DMP3 http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDODMP3

or

SansAmp direct box http://www.zzounds.com/item--TCHXDI

For recording bass into PTLE via the 002 ...what would you use?

Am I correct in understanding that the DMP3 acts as a direct box and more w/meters as apposed to just a direct box <SansAmp>

I do have Amplitube as well for simulation. My main concern is getting in clean and powerful.

Thank you,

Send it through a nice tube pre.

Sans Amp makes a great bass module (although it is a bit more expensive ~175) But it does sound really good. worth it IMO.

I agree with xeetstreet. Bass guitar can never see enough tubes IMO. Best tone I've gotten was through an Avalon 737 direct and also an Ampeg V4B powering a single 300W EV 10" in custom enclosure mic'ed with a Neumann M149 into another 737. However, you don't want to use cheap starved-plate tube stuff like ART. The most cost-effective way to get a tube sound on bass is to just mic a tube bass amp. It's best to record through a DI at the same time, since a mic on an bass cab generally gets either tight mids or tight bottom end, rarely both.

When it comes to DI's I recommend against one trick ponies like the Sans Amp unit. In that price range you've got the BSS AR-133 for $179, which is one of the top DI's out there, and will find many more uses in and out of the studio. In particular its 1MOhm input impedance is a very valuable feature for acoustic guitar on stage for clean treble.

Oh, it appears I misread the question. I thought you were considering the Sans Amp bass DI with amp modelling. If it's a cost-effective DI you're looking for, check out the Proel DBA1CH, also 1MOhm:

It should be noted that the 002 inputs 1-4 are already instrument-appropriate - high impedance, with plenty of gain. You might not like the sound, but they're electrically correct.

Going back a few years... DI boxes came into existence because recording consoles didn't have appropriate instrument inputs. The mic preamps didn't have high enough input impedance, and the line inputs didn't have enough gain.

I have an 002, but I've been using the Avalon 737 for direct guitar and bass, and I've used the Studio Projects VTB-1 for direct piezo-equipped acoustic guitar.

The VTB-1 for acoustic guitar is nice, 'cuz it allows me to put the preamp in the other room with the guitarist, and bring the signal over on a balanced line.

Thank you all for the input. I don't care for the way the 002 ins talk with the bass.
It's very hard to kept a soild level. As soon as you do a "POP or slap" you hit the red.
In order to avoid that you have to to make the overall singal too low.

Maybe just run a compression plugin in real time? Maybe use a direct box or the MAudio pre amp along with a compression plug in like BF?

Thanks again.

This is for a sample library so it's got to be super clean and the sound cannot be too "baked". The sound going direct into the 002 is just too direct and amplitube seems noisy for bass.

The bass being sampled is the Geddy Lee signiture bass, btw.

Here is what I have so far for tone testing...

...Geddy Lee Signature bass recorded direct into Pro Tools with Amplitube and the Bomb Factory compressor. The file was cut as a multi loop and then triggered via Giga. I have not started this project to the level of multi samples however, this is an example of the tone.

Includes

2 tracks of acoustic guitar - off set with delay. Panned L & R
Drum Loop
Synth sounds from SampleTank

Just save your money up and get your self a Sansamp RBI
you wont regret it, and get a compressor too.

the sansamp direct box you mentioned isn't really going
to help you out that much, and i'm not sure about
the M-Audio Pre.

I don't know about the plain sansamp DI box, but their bass-specific box is pretty good. I've owned a dmp3 also, and the sansamp wins out over it. Also the joe meek vc6q is good for DI'ing bass and you get the whole preamp/compression/eq with it. They go pretty low on ebay now.
