Headphone cues, the analog way
PTLE has been long beenknown as haveing more latency issues that any TDM system. Though there are ways of minimizing these effects, you have to sacrifice some of the fruits of a digital workstation. Things like plugins, accurrate screen views, etc. But the best way to fix this is to do it the old way. Do it with a mixer.
eh. So these mixers with their 'aux sends' and 'channel inserts' can really be useful for this stuff. Using the aux sends, we can design a headphone mix and throw it right back at the artist without any interference with latency bacuase it never even gets to the system! Just like mixing live sound. But here's where we can go "studio." Taking the channel insert of every channel, we now have a line thru that can be sent to our system interfaces for recording. Now how cool is that. But there's two problems that come to mind with this setup. First off, effects. Damn. How the hell do we take advantage of that awesome, sweet, souped up, processed, killer vocal sound? We can't, can we? Nope, because that comes from inside the system...too bad the headphone monitor mixes never even see the light of these effects. The second problem...wait...oh damn. I went to take a leak and now I can't remember. ***** . Well, you see a common problem. How would you approach this situation? |

I would suggest you lay off the bong and try to repost your topic.

Re: Headphone cues, the analog way
One thing you could try is picking up some kind of cheap-but-reasonable-sounding effects processor (that has reverbs, delays, and the like), and patch it into the mixer so that the singer can hear effects on his or her voice while they're performing. The trick is to record the signal dry, with no effects. The cheap processor only gets used for the headphones. When you mix, you can use all of your plug-ins.
This seems to work well for me, since I find most singers are a lot more comfortable when they have some processing in their headphone mix, and using this setup, you get some effects in the headphones without the latency hassles.
