Default file managment

If I have a file named file1 and double click it to rename it file1_B with "name region and disk file" selected, Is PT creating an entirely new file on disk or a new poiter to the original file.

If I then chop file1_B in half am I creating 2 new files or poiters to the orignal

You're only changing the name of the file. If you cut it in half you create two new regions of the file, not any new files.

when renaming? I thought regions in bold in the audio regions list ment they are actual files on disk.

Q1. Neither. It is renaming the original file.
Q2. You are creating Pro Tools regions referenced to the newly renamed file.
