Alesis Active or not?
My current set-up is a basic mBox with a G4 933.
Im using typical Shure SM58s and SM57s for recording. Can anyone tell me if there is a big difference between the Alesis M1 MKII Active as oppose to the Alesis M1 MKII with an Alesis RA 150 Power amp? The price is about the same. My question is what are the advantages? The only thing I can think of is that the non poweramp speakers wont be a hassle to carry:O) Any tips would be great! |

Re: Alesis Active or not?
Active, most definitely.
As for the Alesis, I have the mk2 model and absolutely love them. Just my opinion.

Re: Alesis Active or not?
well they are cheaper than the Mackies:O)
as I explained, my set-up is pretty simple. and without a proper studio space, cheap is fine for now. anything close to the price of the Alesis that would fare better? Thanks again:O) |

Re: Alesis Active or not?
dear Mboxluvr,
I've had the M1 Actives for about 2 years. I mixed and mastered my first cd on them and sold 600 units in the first 10 months it was out. They're no where near as bad as some people make them out to be. Just make sure to take the time to see what your mix sounds like through other mediums.(especially cheap cd players, good cd players etc.)For me it was always the low frequencies that needed a little tweeking. I'm selling mine if you're interested. I'm getting more projects going and another cd coming out so now I can afford a little better monitors. Probably the HR824's by Mackie. Email me at [email protected] if you are. I'm sure I can save you some money if that's what you need to do. tim |

Re: Alesis Active or not?
I just mixed a CD with the original (non-active) Monitor Ones and dealt with the same problems...I was flying blind on the bottom end and had to reference on other systems to pinpoint a number of problem frequency ranges. I've been using them for six or seven years and I still almost never get mixes right without having to take notes after listening on other systems and make several corrections.
Alesis' new monitor offerings (the ProLinear 720 and 820) look kind of interesting, but my searches didn't turn up any reviews...maybe they're not shipping yet.

Re: Alesis Active or not?
Save your money and get some real monitors. These things suck, and I say that from experience not from misdirected hostility. I currently own some M1 actives and the response is so damn untrue. Seriously, I would save up and get the Mackies or something else. Thats just my 2 cents...

Re: Alesis Active or not?
I'd agree that there's much better stuff out there, although you'll also spend quite a bit more for it...
However, I'd probably go with the actives, since they're biamplified, so you don't need to worry about the lower frequencies sucking all the power out of your amp... -Duardo |
