Analog desk via control surface?
Ok... I come from an analog background and have just recently been introduced to mixing "In the box". I have also become partners in a studio that is DAW based. The project I'm currently working on, has been all in the box and I've been mixing with a mouse.
Now that I'm partners, we are making some adjustments to the studio and one of those is to either go with a large format analog console (like a used SSL 4000 series) or a highend control surface. My inclination is to go analog, because it's what I'm used to and I like what analog adds. However... what do you guys think about control surfaces. I do like the fact that I wouldn't have to mess with recall. Not to mention the cost savings... What are your perceived pro's and cons? What about cross funtionallity? Now that Digi is writing some 3rd party drives, will a surface like the pro-control work with Nuendo or DP or Logic? I know the Mackie Control is cross functional, but it seems pretty amature-ish... Let me know your thoughts. -Tom

Re: Analog desk via control surface?
tlester,
How about if you go with a couple Manley 16x2's and use them to mix down and/or add analog warmth, etc. You could then still get a Mackie HUI as your controller (it seems a little more pro than the Mackie Control). This would give you the best of both worlds and would save you tons of $. Just my 2 cents. |

It might be a good idea to get your hands on Lynn Fuston's daw sum cd before you make your mind up.It is a real eye opener, relative to staying in the box or going analog.
