Good home setup for $2k??
I've got about $2k to spend. I've got Digi 002, one or two decent mics (no preamps though), amps, & guitars.
What is a good BASIC setup? I just want to put a mic up to a guitar & record into Digi 002... Do I need a preamp? Do I need a converter? I want quality, but I don't need major league stuff... Thanks..... PS. I've been told to get Daking mic preamps, Daking compressors, Apogee converters, & Neve preamps, but I'm just a novice/intermediate user & I'm not very technical. |

Re: Good home setup for $2k??
Depending on your mics, you've already got a real good setup.

Re: Good home setup for $2k??
Get a Digimax LT 8 channel Pre. (600+ bucks or so) Run it lightpipe and pick up a few mics. (E609, Oktava 012, and a few others. )
The Daking will run you about 1500 and up, the Apogee is above 2000.00 and the NEVE.... well... keep saving my friend.... Whoever told you that has expensive (but good) taste.... Check out guys sites here and get a feel for what they are using... Some have expensive gear. Some run studios and can write it all off. Some are hobbyists and just get what works.... You gotta figure out what you need. No need to buy Apogee if you are recording your late night thoughts. The Digimax has a clock that I hear is very close to the Big Ben ( Cavell ) Just gotta get what is affordable for ya man... -Doc

Yep, the digimax clock by tself is worth the cost. (If you don't believe me, just hook it up to an o-scope and compare what you see to other clocks on the market. It's got the most perfect square wave I've seen to date, absolutely no oscillations on the upper and lower legs and no visible modulation in length.)

Just spend the total on a mic. You'll be extremely happy then. You seem to have everything else you need.

Re: Good home setup for $2k??
what all do you want to acomplish with this money? Is there a certaing part of your system that you are aiming for, like guitars or vocals? Do you just want to get as many basic mic's as you can so you can start recording? You said you had some vocal mics, if we knew what you already had and what you want to accomplish with this purchase we might be able to give you better advise.
since you already have vocal mic's I'm going to assume that you are looking for something for drums and guitars. Snare - Beta 57a $140 (has a faster responce time to get more snap than the average sm57) Toms - Audix D2s - $125 ea 375.00 total kick - AKG D112 - $125 Overheads and HHat and Ride - Oktava mc012 around $100 ea (becareful with these, they don't have the best quality control so you have to listen to a few to get a pair that sounds close to each other, otherwise very good mics) Guitar - sm57 $90 Mic total - 1130 Get a digimax lt for abot 600 new off ebay to give you enough pres for all your mics. Total package 1730. Easily within your budget and a little left over for stands and cords. A good place to start. |

Re: Good home setup for $2k??
another option for tom mics would be
Sennhieser e604s 300 bucks for 3 and they clamp onto drums. no stands or anything to buy... only downside is if the drummers drum set has some kind of mounting hardware on the tom you might not be able to get the mic on
