PT crashes when dragging Instrument plug ins

Anyone else seeing this?

If I instantiate an instrument plug in on an instrument track it works fine.
But if I drag (or option drag) one from another track it instantly beachballs the system.


mildly annoying weird one.

I've not seen this and I was recently doing stuff where I was dragging around plugins and VIs (basic Avid VIs, Click, Mini Grand, and Superior Drummer 3). I went back and did some of that again and don't have problems... but these are pretty small sessions.

And you know I'm going to say this... it's very possibly a bad plugin. Did this only happen when the plugin was open? (I'm thinking if it's happening with closed plugins folks would be screaming all over DUC about it). Only with one plugin or plugins from one vendor?

My system: 2022.9, Monterey (and Big Sur), Intel i9 Macbook Pro 15" 2019. I don't have an Apple Silicon system here any more to test on.

but no, they don't have to be open, and no, not one specific manufacturer.

But it happens to me fairly consistently

Are you doing this while the transport is playing? PT allows this but I find it hit or miss.

And what's your buffer size?

Eric good question, I've never done that before... and holy cow it is impressive. I run a small session in loop playback playing some audio tracks and a few Superior Drummer and Mini Grand tracks, while its running and UIs are open just drag the VIs inserts between tracks. The VIs pause as they start but damn it just keeps running. Nice one Avid.

One thing to look out for is delay comp. I've noticed that DC is entirely lost immediately after the new instance of the instrument is created. In my system, it's only after I hit stop and start again that DC is correctly adjusted for.

Then this is very odd. We have similar rigs -- if you mention an instrument or two that are giving you trouble I'll try them here.

even Xpand does it.
But the Arturia Prophet and the Cherry Memorymode also do it.

It doesn't seem to be plug in specific. Just dragging seems to be the problem.

Do you get the beachball if you're playing the unedited default sound of these instruments?

Do other non-instrument plugins ever give you issues?

Do you have the latest/greatest versions of these plugins?

Do you have them on Instrument tracks, or Audio tracks?

I just tried dragging XPand and the Arturia Prophet (V3) and both were fine, though it did briefly stutter when the Prophet was using a non-default preset. I had them on Instrument tracks. They even worked while the transport was playing.

Do you have apps other than PT running at the same time?

Does the beachball show up *every* time you drag?
