Default Latency on 001 when recording?????

My son will be recording guitar tracks thru a 2-channel external preamp and external A/D converters into a Digi 001 (via Optical S/PDIF on the PCI card) on a Mac G4 500. While recording, the stereo mix will go out to an external D/A converter (via Optical S/PDIF), then to an analog mixer, then to headphones.

Is he going to experience any latency problems, i.e., will he notice a delay between him playing a note and then hearing it in the mix thru the headphones?

I do this with my TDM HD system and there is no significant latency thru the external hardware. I am just wondering about thru the 001/Mac, since it is a native system.

There will be only 4 tracks in Pro Tools (stereo backing w/o guitar, and two mono guitar tracks being recorded). So, the loading on the Mac should be minimal.

Thanks!

You will have no trouble if you record using the low-latency mode. With an 001, there is a difference of 51 samples between your developing tracks, (which you probably won't notice) I always record in low-latency, which means I also can't hear any plugin effects going in, but I won't be forced to listen to any latency while recording, which I can't stand. Also, when I record, I lay down the click first, (or a drum), and then after that, every track I record, I subtract 51 samples, so that everything stays lined up with the very first track I recorded.
