Hi,

Hi!

You may need to contact Yamaha support regarding this.

Looks like it's right at the top of that page, updated in Oct 2023.

Most likely it won't hurt.

What version of PT are you running?

Are you seeing the mixer as an audio device in Audio Midi Setup?

Firmware is unlikely to be an issue. Did you read the driver and firmware documentation? Did they say firmware needed to be updated?

So if as you note the driver not working for anything, no CoreAudio device appears in Audio MIDI setup. Then this is entirely a Yamaha issue, nothing to do with Avid or Pro Tools. What did Yamaha support say to you?

This is a bog standard old style .kext device driver, and the most likely issue is you are not installing the driver correctly. You normally have to enable permissions for the driver and reboot the Mac. You must follow clear install instructions in the documentation delivered with the driver. You must grant the permissions for the kext within 30 minutes of installation or the option goes away (so run the installer again, and check the permissions are granted exactly as the instructions say).

If you do that and it still does not work you can check of the kext is loaded, with typing in Terminal... ($ is the shell command prompt, will likely be different for you)

$ kextstat | grep -i yamaha

Possibly try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, again following the Yamaha documentation to do this.

Have I mentioned enough you need to exactly follow the documentation? If you have been you need to say that clearly.

And again, your best option if stuck is to contact Yamaha support. Especially since we are a page in here already and don't have any clue if you are running on Intel, Apple Silicon etc.

---

It's really great that Yamaha is still providing drivers for a product first shipped in in 1998 (*way* better product/customer support there than Avid). But it is a kext and not a modern AudioDriverKit driver (aka dext aka user space driver). And that may be a caution. You may want to try to find out/ask Yamaha support what their plans are there and plan the future use/life of this mixer accordingly since Apple really want to kill off kexts eventually.

You may want to give this a look RE: security settings on Apple Silicon.

Disk startup permissions have nothing to do with drivers loading or driver permissions. And like worrying about firmware this is a waste of time.

I've already described the most likely problems that affect kext loading on recent macOS versions. Already given the command that will tell if the kext is installed on disk and loaded or not.
