more intimate shotgun with minimized room sound VS lav
i have some shotgun dialog and its very clean + was captured in a acoustically treated room so the room sound is not problematic. I'm just hoping to get a tips on how people eq good shotgun dialog to make it a bit more intimate (like a lav)
so, shotgun with slight minimized room sound??? note: im used to using a lav track but the lav in this case has too many ruffles so just hoping to get some more presence in the shotgun track |

Wow, I never ever preferred the lav to the boom if both where OK... Clean, recorded in a treated room? What more do you want! If you want bonedry, you could use a C4 to surpress the ambience around the dialogue, or use Unveil, depending on your platform:

Re: more intimate shotgun with minimized room sound VS lav
I have to agree with others here; good , clean boom track, in a treated room ..... usually dream time
Try a steep HP on your dlog tracks, maybe start @ 100 hz. kasper |

Re: more intimate shotgun with minimized room sound VS lav
i agree boom is better, i think have used lav as a crutch or because it had supposed intimacy. therefore i think i am just used that slight closer but more tinny sound of lav. but in this case, after getting used the boom, its actually sounds way better...
C4 settings for male dialog anyone? Quote:

Re: more intimate shotgun with minimized room sound VS lav
Not boost, cut. Everything below 100 with the high-pass.
I'd be careful boosting EQ on dlog tracks, unless you are trying to match cuts that are drastically different, try cutting before boosting. The lav is sometimes better because it's closer to the talent. (in a noisy env, that's usually better) On low-budget, you're lucky to get boom at all, or good boom (give that grip the boom pole .... how hard can it be? So, you probably just got used to it being the better audio, or the only audio. Anyway, I think soundworx was suggesting the C4 as a hard gate to suck out the b/g amb - - something I would only do as a last resort for noisy tracks, which you don't have. Just hit the dlog sub compressor to give you a little glue, keep things from being way out of line, but I wouldn't want any pumping or heavy compression artifacts. just my 2c. kasper |

Re: more intimate shotgun with minimized room sound VS lav
Dialog Sub Compressor may be used on dialog aux bus with very gentle setting.
I don't like myself compressors on dialogs as it brings up noise and room reflections. Better use some limiter to avoid peaks and keep your tracks within specs. Again, limiter not to make it louder but assuring no spikes will be in the program. Especially important with modern TV compliances. I use transparent limiters like Nugen ISL or Massey L2007. You may want simply to insert them on your Master bus instead dialog bus. Muliband like McDSP, or C4/6 or WaveArts are all good and may be helpful. But I would't recommend you using them since you asking this question, thus not familiar with 'em. As they are known for taking audio the wrong way easily when misused. Try not to compress at all. And try using a Capital letter when you start a new sentence.

Re: more intimate shotgun with minimized room sound VS lav
Route all your dialog tracks to a sub master/aux. Then you can process and control all dlog.
Good for printing stems/M+E tracks too. (pretty standard way of routing, all elements will have their own subs - dlog, AMB, SFX, MX) Michael points out some important issues w/compressing, but I find with modern techniques/gear, you almost always need some compression. The dynamic range is just too great. Not so in the good ol days of Nagra 1/4" and mag laybacks .... but I digress. Just don't overdo it with processing of any kind. kasper |
