Stupid question about Disc Allocation
User for many years. Long time no see, guys!
Been through this before but just double/triple/quadruple checking. I just copied a 192GB ProTools Sessions folder that contains many individual sessions from one hard drive (my 2nd internal drive) to an external. I want to free up some space on the internal drive but before trashing the whole folder from the internal drive, first I tested by deleting (and then emptying the trash) a not-so important session folder from the original location. Then I opened up the copied session on the external drive and the files were all there and the session ran fine. I checked the Disc Allocation and the Root Media Folder listed on the tracks is the ORIGINAL location (MacIntoshHD2,...) I armed a new track and recorded. Obviously the new track's Root Media Folder listed is the new location. Is this correct? I guess this is the stupid part of the question. Why is the ORIGINAL folder listed there when essentially that folder no longer exists? After you're done rolling your eyes just let me know why this is and if it's safe to proceed with the clean-up job. Thanks all! As long as all of the source media files were where they were supposed to be when you copied the folders, you'll be fine.

Yeah, that's normal. Sessions will always look for their original disk allocation first. So if you armed one of those old tracks that was tracked on that original drive, PT would make a new session folder and a new audio files folder on the original disk. Your ok to delete, just be sure to change all those sessions you copied disk allocation when you open them up next. Otherwise your going to have major file management headaches...

Re: Stupid question about Disc Allocation
A better way is to use the 'Save Copy In' menu item under 'File' to copy sessions to a different drive. That way both the current media location and record media location update to the new location.
